History of Area Code 702
Area code 702 is one of the 86 original area codes created by AT&T in 1947, when the first nationwide numbering plan went into effect on January 1 of that year. It was assigned to Nevada as part of the initial map that divided the United States and Canada into geographic dialing regions.
Since its activation, the geographic area covered by 702 has been reshaped by the following splits:
- 1998 — area code 775 split off to cover almost all of Nevada outside Clark County — Reno, Carson City, Elko, and the rural counties — on December 12, 1998
Overlay codes have been added to the same geographic territory in:
- 2014 — area code 725 activated as an overlay

Overlay Codes 702
Area code 725 shares the same geographic territory as 702 (added in 2014). New phone numbers in the region may be assigned either code.
Because multiple area codes serve the same area, ten-digit dialing is mandatory for all local calls. A call from any of these codes originates from the same geographic region in Nevada.
The Cultural Weight of a 702 Number
Area code 702 entered service in October 1947 as one of the original 86 area codes, and for the first 51 years of its existence it covered the entire state of Nevada. The state’s small population — under one million residents through the 1980s — meant that no relief action was needed until population growth in the Las Vegas Valley and northern Nevada finally forced the split on December 12, 1998, when almost all of Nevada outside Clark County (Reno, Carson City, Elko, and the rural counties) moved to the new 775 area code. The split followed a notable bit of speculation that area code 777 — corresponding to the winning slot machine combination — would be assigned to Las Vegas; the telecommunications industry ruled out any easily recognizable area code, and the city kept 702 as a consolation prize for the rest of Nevada moving out. The Las Vegas Valley itself, including Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, and Mesquite, has remained on 702 ever since.
702 carries cultural weight as the area code of the Las Vegas Strip, which gives it perhaps the highest brand-recognition-per-resident of any American area code. The Bellagio, the Wynn, MGM Grand, Caesars Palace, the Venetian, and dozens of other casino-resort properties all operate from within the 702 footprint. So do the city’s professional sports franchises (the Golden Knights, the Raiders) and the world’s largest convention complexes. The relatively late 725 overlay activated on May 3, 2014, introducing mandatory ten-digit dialing to Las Vegas; by then ten-digit dialing was the norm in nearly every other major US metro. As of 2025, 702/725 is not projected to exhaust until approximately 2055, making it one of the most numerically comfortable overlay complexes in a fast-growing region.
How to Get a Phone Number with Area Code 702
There are three ways to get a phone number with the 702 area code, each suited to a different need:
- Buy from a premium-number specialist. Companies that hold curated inventories of specific area codes can sell you a 702 number directly, often with a one-time fee and ownership transferred to you (no recurring carrier fees). This is the option for picking a specific memorable number, or for getting an area code that most carriers won’t let you request. Contact us about a 702 number.
- Sign up with a VoIP carrier. Voice-over-IP services (such as Google Voice, OpenPhone, Grasshopper, and many others) can typically provision a 702 number on request, especially for active overlay codes. You won’t usually get to pick the specific number, but you’ll get a working line in the area code. This is the cheapest option for anyone who doesn’t need a particular number.
- Port an existing 702 number. If you already have a 702 phone number with another carrier, you can transfer it (port it) to a new service provider while keeping the number. This works for landlines, cell phones, and VoIP services, though landlines outside of Nevada sometimes can’t accept inbound ports of 702 numbers due to 911 routing rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 702 area code still in use?
Yes. 702 is actively assigned to new phone lines in Clark County, including the Las Vegas Valley and the southern tip of Nevada.
What is the difference between 702 and 725?
Today they share the same geographic territory in Nevada. New phone lines in the area may be assigned either code. The two codes work identically for calling, billing, and service.
Can I get a 702 number if I don't live in Nevada?
Yes. Phone numbers are no longer tied to a physical address. With VoIP service or a number broker, you can hold a 702 number from anywhere in the world. The number routes to whatever device or carrier you specify.
Is 702 a scam area code?
No. 702 is a legitimate, active area code for Clark County, including the Las Vegas Valley and the southern tip of Nevada. Like any area code, scammers occasionally spoof 702 caller IDs, but the code itself is heavily used by real Nevada businesses, government offices, and residents.
Is 702 only for Las Vegas?
702 (and its overlay 725) covers all of Clark County, Nevada, which includes Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, Mesquite, and the surrounding southern tip of Nevada. The rest of Nevada — Reno, Carson City, and the rural counties — uses 775.
Why didn't Las Vegas get area code 777?
After the 1998 Nevada split, there was speculation that the slot-machine-evoking 777 would be assigned to Las Vegas. The telecommunications industry rejected the idea on the basis that easily-recognizable area codes (any with repeating digits) shouldn’t be assigned to specific markets; 725 was chosen instead when an overlay was needed in 2014.
