History of Area Code 313

Area code 313 is one of the 86 original area codes created by AT&T in 1947, when the first nationwide numbering plan went into effect on January 1 of that year. It was assigned to Michigan as part of the initial map that divided the United States and Canada into geographic dialing regions.

Since its activation, the geographic area covered by 313 has been reshaped by the following splits:

  • 1993 — area code 810 split off to cover Northern portion of 313, including Detroit's northern suburbs, Flint, and the southern Thumb, split off on December 1, 1993 to form area code 810.
  • 1997 — area code 734 split off to cover Western portion including Ann Arbor, Monroe County, and western and downriver Wayne County split off on December 13, 1997 to form area code 734.

Overlay codes have been added to the same geographic territory in:

  • 2025 — area code 679 activated as an overlay

Overlay Codes 313

Area code 679 shares the same geographic territory as 313 (added in 2025). New phone numbers in the region may be assigned either code.

Because multiple area codes serve the same area, ten-digit dialing is mandatory for all local calls. A call from any of these codes originates from the same geographic region in Michigan.

The Cultural Weight of a 313 Number

Area code 313 was assigned in October 1947 as one of the original 86 North American area codes, initially covering the entire southeastern quadrant of Michigan including Metro Detroit, Flint, and the southern Thumb. Two splits — creating area code 810 in December 1993 and area code 734 in December 1997 — progressively reduced 313 to its present footprint: the urban core of Detroit and its immediately adjacent suburbs in Wayne County. Far from diminishing the code’s significance, that contraction concentrated its identity. By the time all 313 prefixes were assigned and overlay code 679 entered service on November 7, 2025, opposition to the change had centered on the cultural weight of the digits themselves: residents and public officials argued before the Michigan Public Service Commission that “313” had become synonymous with the city of Detroit in a way that few area codes anywhere have matched. The number appears on bumper stickers, merchandise, and tattoos; March 13 is observed annually as 313 Day, a civic celebration involving riverfront festivals, neighborhood events, and community programming across the city.

Detroit’s identity as Motor City, Motown, and the birthplace of techno is inseparable from the 313 area code. Motown Records, founded in Detroit, produced artists including Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and The Supremes from studios within the 313 footprint, and the Motown Historical Museum on West Grand Boulevard preserves that legacy. Detroit also gave rise to electronic techno music and a deep hip-hop tradition: Eminem titled a track “313” on his 1996 independent debut album Infinite, and the 2002 film 8 Mile — set in Detroit — references the area code repeatedly, with Eminem’s character and his crew calling themselves “three one third.” Fellow Detroit rappers Big Sean and Royce da 5’9″ have also invoked 313 as a marker of authenticity. The city’s four major professional sports franchises — the Detroit Tigers (MLB), Detroit Lions (NFL), Detroit Red Wings (NHL, nicknamed Hockeytown), and Detroit Pistons (NBA) — are headquartered within or adjacent to the 313 area. Neighborhoods including Midtown, Corktown, Eastern Market, and the Woodward Avenue corridor remain cultural anchors, while Detroit was designated a UNESCO City of Design in 2015, the first U.S. city to receive that honor.

How to Get a Phone Number with Area Code 313

There are three ways to get a phone number with the 313 area code, each suited to a different need:

  1. Buy from a premium-number specialist. Companies that hold curated inventories of specific area codes can sell you a 313 number directly, often with a one-time fee and ownership transferred to you (no recurring carrier fees). This is the option for picking a specific memorable number, or for getting an area code that most carriers won’t let you request. Browse our 313 inventory.
  2. Sign up with a VoIP carrier. Voice-over-IP services (such as Google Voice, OpenPhone, Grasshopper, and many others) can typically provision a 313 number on request, especially for active overlay codes. You won’t usually get to pick the specific number, but you’ll get a working line in the area code. This is the cheapest option for anyone who doesn’t need a particular number.
  3. Port an existing 313 number. If you already have a 313 phone number with another carrier, you can transfer it (port it) to a new service provider while keeping the number. This works for landlines, cell phones, and VoIP services, though landlines outside of Michigan sometimes can’t accept inbound ports of 313 numbers due to 911 routing rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 313 area code still in use?
Yes. 313 is actively assigned to new phone lines in Detroit and its closest suburbs in Wayne County, including the enclave cities of Hamtramck and Highland Park, and communities such as Allen Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, the Grosse Pointe communities, Harper Woods, Inkster, Melvindale, Lincoln Park, Redford, River Rouge, and Taylor.

What is the difference between 313 and 679?
Today they share the same geographic territory in Michigan. New phone lines in the area may be assigned either code. The two codes work identically for calling, billing, and service.

Can I get a 313 number if I don't live in Michigan?
Yes. Phone numbers are no longer tied to a physical address. With VoIP service or a number broker, you can hold a 313 number from anywhere in the world. The number routes to whatever device or carrier you specify.

Is 313 a scam area code?
No. 313 is a legitimate, active area code for Detroit and its closest suburbs in Wayne County, including the enclave cities of Hamtramck and Highland Park, and communities such as Allen Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, the Grosse Pointe communities, Harper Woods, Inkster, Melvindale, Lincoln Park, Redford, River Rouge, and Taylor. Like any area code, scammers occasionally spoof 313 caller IDs, but the code itself is heavily used by real Michigan businesses, government offices, and residents.

What cities does area code 313 cover?
Area code 313 covers Detroit and its closest Wayne County suburbs, including Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Livonia, Redford, River Rouge, Taylor, Ecorse, Melvindale, the Grosse Pointe communities, Allen Park, and Harper Woods.

Does the 313 area code require ten-digit dialing?
Yes. Since October 7, 2025, ten-digit dialing is mandatory for all local calls within area code 313. This requirement was introduced because overlay code 679 entered service on November 7, 2025, covering the same geographic territory.

Why was area code 679 added to Detroit?
All available prefixes in 313 were assigned, exhausting the supply of new numbers. Rather than splitting off another geographic portion of Metro Detroit, regulators chose an overlay — area code 679 — so that existing 313 customers keep their numbers while new lines receive 679 numbers. NANPA estimates the overlay will provide numbering relief through at least 2071.

Why is 313 so culturally significant to Detroit?
Area code 313 has served Detroit since 1947 and, after the 1993 and 1997 splits, became tightly associated with the city’s urban core. It appears in Eminem’s music and in the 2002 film 8 Mile, is invoked by Detroit rappers as a symbol of local identity, and is celebrated annually on March 13 (313 Day) with citywide events. Detroiters regard the digits as an informal emblem of the city.
