History of Area Code 404

Area code 404 is one of the 86 original area codes created by AT&T in 1947, when the first nationwide numbering plan went into effect on January 1 of that year. It was assigned to Georgia as part of the initial map that divided the United States and Canada into geographic dialing regions.

Since its activation, the geographic area covered by 404 has been reshaped by the following splits:

  • 1954 — area code 912 split off to cover southern Georgia — Savannah, Macon, Albany, and the coastal plain
  • 1992 — area code 706 split off to cover northern and western Georgia outside the Atlanta metro — Athens, Augusta, Columbus, and the mountains — on May 3, 1992
  • 1995 — area code 770 split off to cover Atlanta's suburbs — Cobb, Gwinnett, DeKalb outside I-285, and the surrounding counties — leaving 404 with the urban core inside the Perimeter

Overlay codes have been added to the same geographic territory in:

  • 1998 — area code 678 activated as an overlay
  • 2010 — area code 470 activated as an overlay
  • 2022 — area code 943 activated as an overlay

Cities and Areas Served by 404

Area code 404 serves the urban core of Atlanta and its close-in suburbs inside Interstate 285, including the following cities and communities:

  • Atlanta (Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, Virginia-Highland, Decatur, East Point, College Park, parts of Sandy Springs)

Nearby area codes covering the same broader region include: 678, 470, 943, 770, 706, 762, 912.

Overlay Codes for 404

Area code 678 shares the same geographic territory as 404 (added in 1998). New phone numbers in the region may be assigned either code.

Area code 470 shares the same geographic territory as 404 (added in 2010). New phone numbers in the region may be assigned either code.

Area code 943 shares the same geographic territory as 404 (added in 2022). New phone numbers in the region may be assigned either code.

Because multiple area codes serve the same area, ten-digit dialing is mandatory for all local calls. A call from any of these codes originates from the same geographic region in Georgia.

The Cultural Weight of a 404 Number

Area code 404 was one of the original 86 NANP codes activated in 1947, when it covered the entire state of Georgia — from the mountains in the north to the coastal plain in the south. Three splits stripped it down over the next half-century: 912 took southern Georgia in 1954, 706 took northern and western Georgia outside metro Atlanta in 1992, and on August 1, 1995 area code 770 was created for Atlanta’s suburbs, leaving 404 covering only the urban core inside the I-285 perimeter. The 1995 metro/suburb split was politically charged in a way the earlier ones weren’t: Atlanta’s racial demographics — majority Black within the city, majority white in the surrounding counties at the time — meant that the boundary between 404 and 770 mapped onto an existing line of class and race tension. Civil rights leaders publicly objected to the split, and the framing of 404 as the ‘inner-city’ code stuck. The 678 overlay arrived three years later on January 6, 1998 as relief for both 404 and 770, ending the brief period of seven-digit dialing in the metro.

404 became one of the most consciously deployed cultural area codes in American hip-hop. The Atlanta rap scene that emerged in the 1990s (OutKast, Goodie Mob, Ludacris) and dominated the 2000s and 2010s (T.I., Young Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Future, Migos, the entire trap-music export) treated 404 as a regional badge — the way 213 functioned for early-90s LA, or 212/917 for New York. The Olympics in 1996, the founding of Hartsfield-Jackson as the world’s busiest airport, and the post-2010 expansion of Atlanta’s film and TV production industry (Tyler Perry Studios, multiple Marvel productions) all anchored the 404 identity. Two further overlays followed: 470 in 2010 covering 404/770/678, and 943 in 2022 as the fourth overlay; the metro now operates on a four-code 404/678/470/943 overlay complex plus the 770 suburb code.

How to Get a Phone Number with Area Code 404

There are three ways to get a phone number with the 404 area code, each suited to a different need:

  1. Buy from a premium-number specialist. Companies that hold curated inventories of specific area codes can sell you a 404 number directly, often with a one-time fee and ownership transferred to you (no recurring carrier fees). This is the option for picking a specific memorable number, or for getting an area code that most carriers won’t let you request. Browse our 404 inventory.
  2. Sign up with a VoIP carrier. Voice-over-IP services (such as Google Voice, OpenPhone, Grasshopper, and many others) can typically provision a 404 number on request, especially for active overlay codes. You won’t usually get to pick the specific number, but you’ll get a working line in the area code. This is the cheapest option for anyone who doesn’t need a particular number.
  3. Port an existing 404 number. If you already have a 404 phone number with another carrier, you can transfer it (port it) to a new service provider while keeping the number. This works for landlines, cell phones, and VoIP services, though landlines outside of Georgia sometimes can’t accept inbound ports of 404 numbers due to 911 routing rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 404 area code still in use?
Yes. 404 is actively assigned to new phone lines in the urban core of Atlanta and its close-in suburbs inside Interstate 285.

What is the difference between 404 and 678?
Today they share the same geographic territory in Georgia. New phone lines in the area may be assigned either code. The two codes work identically for calling, billing, and service.

Can I get a 404 number if I don't live in Georgia?
Yes. Phone numbers are no longer tied to a physical address. With VoIP service or a number broker, you can hold a 404 number from anywhere in the world. The number routes to whatever device or carrier you specify.

Is 404 a scam area code?
No. 404 is a legitimate, active area code for the urban core of Atlanta and its close-in suburbs inside Interstate 285. Like any area code, scammers occasionally spoof 404 caller IDs, but the code itself is heavily used by real Georgia businesses, government offices, and residents.

Why is 404 considered the Atlanta area code when there are several?
404 is the original Atlanta code from 1947 and now covers the urban core inside the I-285 perimeter. 770, 678, 470, and 943 also serve the metro, but 404 carries the historical and cultural weight of being the city’s first code.

What's the boundary between 404 and 770?
Roughly Interstate 285, the perimeter highway that loops around Atlanta. The 1995 split assigned everything inside I-285 to 404 (with some adjustment) and everything outside it to 770. The boundary has been softened by subsequent overlays.
