The +212 area code isn’t an area code at all: +212 is the country code for Morocco. A Manhattan 212 number shows up as (212) or +1 212, so a call from +212 followed by nine digits came from a Moroccan number. If it rang once and stopped, don’t call it back.
It’s an easy mix-up, since 212 is also one of America’s best-known area codes. Here’s how to tell them apart, why one-ring +212 calls happen, and how to block them on iPhone and Android, checked against Apple’s, Google’s, Samsung’s, the FTC’s and the FCC’s own pages in October 2026.
+212 vs. (212): how to read the number on your screen
The plus sign is the clue. A plus sign at the start of a phone number means the digits right after it are a country code. So look at what comes straight after the plus.
- +212 means Morocco. The ITU, the United Nations agency that assigns country codes, gives 212 to the Kingdom of Morocco. A Moroccan number has nine digits after the +212. Most mobile numbers start with 6 or 7 and landlines start with 5, so a call from a Moroccan cell phone usually looks like +212 6XX-XXXXXX.
- +1 212 means Manhattan. The U.S., Canada and some Caribbean countries all share country code 1. A Manhattan number is +1, then the 212 area code, then seven more digits: +1 (212) XXX-XXXX. Many phones leave off the +1 for U.S. numbers and just show (212) XXX-XXXX.
The quick test: if there’s a 1 between the plus sign and the 212, it’s New York. If 212 comes right after the plus sign, it’s Morocco. You can also count digits: a U.S. number has 10 digits after the +1, while a Moroccan number has 9 after the +212.
One caution: the FTC says scammers can make any name or number show up on your caller ID. The number tells you what a call claims to be, not who’s really calling.

If your phone rang once, maybe late at night, and showed a +212 number you don’t know, you’ve probably met the “one ring” scam. The FCC also calls it by its Japanese name, wangiri.
Here’s how it works, according to the FTC and FCC:
- Scammers use auto-dialers to call cell phones in bulk, letting each one ring just once so you get a missed-call alert.
- They’re counting on you to call back, out of curiosity or because you think a real call got cut off.
- The number you call back is an international toll number. You’re charged for the call, and most of that money goes to the scammer. You may hear a recording asking you to hold while per-minute charges add up.
The FCC warns that these calls may come from a foreign country with a code that looks deceptively like a U.S. area code. +212 is a perfect example: at a glance, it looks like New York. Consumer warnings in Europe, including one from the Dutch consumer TV program Radar, have flagged missed calls from +212 mobile numbers as this scam.
Other one-ring calls use Caribbean codes, such as 809 and 876, that look like U.S. area codes but are international numbers. Our guide to area codes to avoid covers those.
Should you call a +212 number back?
No, unless you recognize the number. The FTC’s advice is simple: don’t call back. It also points out that the risk comes from calling back, not from getting the call. If you know someone in Morocco, call them on the number you already have saved.
Already called back? Here’s what the FTC suggests:
- Read your phone bill line by line and look for charges you don’t recognize.
- If you were charged, contact your carrier and try to resolve it with them.
- If your carrier doesn’t fix it, file complaints with the FTC (DoNotCall.gov) and the FCC (fcc.gov/complaints).

How to block or silence +212 calls on iPhone
There’s no built-in setting that blocks a whole country code. Apple’s blocking instructions cover specific numbers, contacts and email addresses only. These three settings still handle +212 calls well.
1. Silence or screen unknown callers
- Open Settings, tap Apps, then tap Phone.
- Scroll to Screen Unknown Callers.
- Choose Silence to send calls from numbers you haven’t saved straight to voicemail. Or choose Ask Reason for Calling, and your iPhone asks the caller why they’re calling before it rings.
If you have friends, family or clients in Morocco, save their numbers in Contacts first (with the +212), so their calls still come through. Apple notes that calls aren’t screened while you’re roaming. Apple’s page on managing unknown callers has the details.
2. Turn on the spam filter
In the same place (Settings > Apps > Phone), scroll down to Call Filtering and turn on your spam filter. To review filtered calls, open the Phone app, tap the Filter button, then tap Spam.
3. Block the specific number
- Open the Phone app and go to your recent calls.
- Tap the +212 number. In Classic view, tap the Info button next to it.
- Scroll down and tap Block Caller.
Blocked callers aren’t notified. They can still leave a voicemail, but you won’t get an alert. Scammers switch numbers often, so pair this with the settings above. Our guide on how to block phone numbers on iPhone covers more ways to do it.
How to block +212 calls on Android
Menus differ by phone maker. Here are the steps for the two most common Phone apps: Google’s (on Pixel and many other Android phones) and Samsung’s.
Google Phone app
To block one number:
- Open the Phone app, tap More, then Call history.
- Tap a call from the +212 number.
- Tap Block / report spam.
To filter spam calls:
- Open the Phone app, tap More options, then Settings.
- Tap Caller ID and spam and make sure See caller ID & spam is on.
- Turn on Filter spam calls.
Filtered calls don’t trigger a missed-call or voicemail alert, but they still show in your call history, so don’t call them back from there. (Phones with automatic Call Screen show spam blocking as a Call Screen option instead of this switch.) The Unknown switch under Settings > Blocked numbers only blocks private or unidentified callers, so it won’t stop a +212 call that shows its number. Google’s block a number help page has more.
Samsung Galaxy
- Open the Phone app, tap More options (three dots), then Settings.
- Tap Caller ID and spam protection, turn on the switch at the top and tap Agree.
- Turn on Block spam and scam calls, then choose Block all spam and scam calls or Only block high-risk scam calls.
Samsung says this feature may not be available on all carriers or models. To block one number, go to Settings > Block numbers in the Phone app, enter the number and tap the plus sign.
Can Android block every +212 number? Google’s and Samsung’s help pages don’t describe a built-in way to block a whole country code. If your phone’s block settings do show a “starts with” option, you can enter +212 there. For more ideas, see our guide on how to block area codes on Android phones.
Is there a 212 area code in Canada?
No. 212 is a U.S. area code, and it covers only one place: Manhattan, in New York City. It isn’t on the Canadian Numbering Administrator’s list of Canadian area codes.
The confusion likely comes from the shared +1. Canada and the U.S. use the same country code, so the three digits after the +1 tell you where a number is. Canadian codes include 416 and 647 in Ontario and 514 and 438 in Quebec.
What a real 212 number is
212 is Manhattan’s original area code. When it started in 1947, it covered all five boroughs of New York City. After later splits, it has covered only Manhattan since 1992, according to New York’s Public Service Commission. Today Manhattan shares 212 with 646 and 332, plus 917, which covers the whole city.
That long history is why 212 is so closely linked with New York. For the full story, read our brief history of area code 212.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is +212 a New York area code?
No. +212 is Morocco’s country code. A New York 212 number written in international format always has a 1 in front: +1 212.
What does +212 6 mean?
It’s a Moroccan mobile number. Most Moroccan mobile numbers start with 6 or 7 after the +212, and landlines start with 5.
Is it dangerous to answer a +212 call?
The FTC says the risk in a one-ring scam comes from calling back, not from getting the call. If you don’t know anyone in Morocco, let it go to voicemail. If you do pick up an unexpected call, don’t press any numbers and don’t share personal details.
Why am I getting +212 calls if I don’t know anyone in Morocco?
Scammers use auto-dialers to ring long lists of phone numbers, so you don’t need any connection to Morocco to get one. And because caller ID can be faked, the number you see may not be where the call really came from.
I called a +212 number back. What should I do?
Check your phone bill for charges you don’t recognize and contact your carrier about any you find. If that doesn’t resolve it, the FTC suggests filing complaints with the FTC and the FCC.
Can I block all +212 numbers on my iPhone?
Not with a built-in setting. Set Screen Unknown Callers to Silence, turn on the spam filter, and save real Moroccan contacts so they still ring.
How do I write a Manhattan 212 number for someone overseas?
Write +1 212 followed by the seven-digit number, for example +1 212 555 0123. Without the 1, the number would start with +212 and be read as a Moroccan number.
Looking for a real Manhattan 212 number?
212areacode.com has sold real Manhattan 212 numbers since 2009. They’re U.S. numbers, written +1 212 in international format, never +212.
