History of Area Code 619

Area code 619 was activated on January 1, 1982 in connection with area code 714. The decision was driven by population growth and the exhaustion of available phone numbers in the original numbering plan area.

Since its activation, the geographic area covered by 619 has been reshaped by the following splits:

  • 1997 — area code 760 split off to cover On March 23, 1997, outer northern San Diego County, desert areas, and southeastern California geographic regions were split off into the new 760 area code.
  • 1999 — area code 858 split off to cover On June 12, 1999, northwest San Diego County was assigned the new 858 area code. A planned second split into 935 was later cancelled after NANPA implemented 1000-block number pooling, which extended 619's numbering life.

Overlay codes have been added to the same geographic territory in:

  • 2019 — area code 858 activated as an overlay

Cities and Areas Served by 619

Area code 619 serves Central and southern San Diego County, from downtown San Diego south to the U.S.–Mexico border, including the following cities and communities:

  • San Diego
  • Chula Vista
  • El Cajon
  • National City
  • La Mesa
  • Coronado
  • Imperial Beach
  • Lemon Grove

Nearby area codes covering the same broader region include: 858, 760, 442.

Overlay Codes 619

Area code 858 shares the same geographic territory as 619 (added in 2019). New phone numbers in the region may be assigned either code.

Because multiple area codes serve the same area, ten-digit dialing is mandatory for all local calls. A call from any of these codes originates from the same geographic region in California.

The Cultural Weight of a 619 Number

Area code 619 was carved out of the old 714 numbering plan on January 1, 1982, making it the first new California area code since 1959. At its creation it blanketed nearly the entire southernmost tip of the state, from coastal San Diego east to the Nevada border and south to the Mexican line. Growth quickly eroded that footprint: in 1997 the outer desert and high-desert communities were reassigned to 760, and in 1999 the affluent coastal suburbs of northwest San Diego County moved to the newly created 858. A planned third split into a proposed 935 area code was cancelled after federal regulators introduced 1000-block number pooling, preserving 619 for the urban core. When projections showed 619 approaching number exhaustion around March 2019, the California Public Utilities Commission eliminated the geographic boundary between 619 and 858 entirely, converting them into a full overlay complex—mandatory ten-digit local dialing took effect in June 2018. Today 619 anchors the southwestern edge of the continental United States, serving downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, North Park, Hillcrest, Coronado, Chula Vista, National City, and the South Bay communities that run to the Tijuana border.

Few three-digit strings carry the street-level weight of 619. Professional wrestler Rey Mysterio, a Chula Vista native, named his signature finishing move ‘The 619′ after the area code, and his WWE entrance theme—’Booyaka 619,’ performed by fellow San Diego band P.O.D.—turned the number into a globally recognized chant. NFL running back Reggie Bush, a Spring Valley native, painted ‘619’ in his eye black during games as an explicit tribute to his roots. The San Diego Padres, whose home field Petco Park sits squarely within the 619 footprint in the East Village neighborhood of downtown, and the former San Diego Chargers—who played at Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley before relocating in 2017—gave the code its sports identity. In music, Snoop Dogg released a track titled ‘619’ in 2002 paying homage to the region. The comedy film Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), set in San Diego, embedded the city’s identity in pop culture. Every June 19, residents observe informal ‘619 Day,’ a grassroots social-media celebration using #619day that is distinct from, but shares the date of, the national Juneteenth observance.

How to Get a Phone Number with Area Code 619

There are three ways to get a phone number with the 619 area code, each suited to a different need:

  1. Buy from a premium-number specialist. Companies that hold curated inventories of specific area codes can sell you a 619 number directly, often with a one-time fee and ownership transferred to you (no recurring carrier fees). This is the option for picking a specific memorable number, or for getting an area code that most carriers won’t let you request. Browse our 619 inventory.
  2. Sign up with a VoIP carrier. Voice-over-IP services (such as Google Voice, OpenPhone, Grasshopper, and many others) can typically provision a 619 number on request, especially for active overlay codes. You won’t usually get to pick the specific number, but you’ll get a working line in the area code. This is the cheapest option for anyone who doesn’t need a particular number.
  3. Port an existing 619 number. If you already have a 619 phone number with another carrier, you can transfer it (port it) to a new service provider while keeping the number. This works for landlines, cell phones, and VoIP services, though landlines outside of California sometimes can’t accept inbound ports of 619 numbers due to 911 routing rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 619 area code still in use?
Yes. 619 is actively assigned to new phone lines in Central and southern San Diego County, from downtown San Diego south to the U.S.–Mexico border.

What is the difference between 619 and 858?
Today they share the same geographic territory in California. New phone lines in the area may be assigned either code. The two codes work identically for calling, billing, and service.

What is the parent area code of 619?
Area code 619 is an overlay of 714. Both codes serve the same region of California.

Can I get a 619 number if I don't live in California?
Yes. Phone numbers are no longer tied to a physical address. With VoIP service or a number broker, you can hold a 619 number from anywhere in the world. The number routes to whatever device or carrier you specify.

Is 619 a scam area code?
No. 619 is a legitimate, active area code for Central and southern San Diego County, from downtown San Diego south to the U.S.–Mexico border. Like any area code, scammers occasionally spoof 619 caller IDs, but the code itself is heavily used by real California businesses, government offices, and residents.

What cities does the 619 area code cover?
Area code 619 serves central and southern San Diego County, including San Diego (downtown, North Park, Hillcrest, and South San Diego), Chula Vista, El Cajon, National City, La Mesa, Coronado, Imperial Beach, and Lemon Grove, among other communities.

Does the 619 area code still require ten-digit dialing?
Yes. Because 619 and 858 form an overlay complex—both codes serve the same geographic area—all local calls within the region require ten-digit dialing (area code + seven-digit number). This requirement took effect in June 2018.

What is the relationship between area codes 619 and 858?
They are overlay codes. Originally 858 was split from 619 in 1999 to serve northwest San Diego County. In 2019, the California Public Utilities Commission eliminated the boundary between them, making both codes available throughout inner San Diego County simultaneously.

Why is 619 so culturally significant in San Diego?
619 is informally synonymous with San Diego itself. The code has been adopted as a local identity marker—referenced by wrestler Rey Mysterio for his signature move, worn as eye black by NFL player Reggie Bush, name-checked in music by Snoop Dogg, and celebrated annually on ‘619 Day’ (June 19).
